چکیده

The mosquito control potential of the mosquitofish and Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) were evaluated in experimental wild rice fields in Lake County, California. Fields were assigned one of six treatment: control, 1.1 kg/ha G. affinis, 3.4 kg/ha G. affinis, Bti only (6 kg/ha Vectobac granules), 1.1 kg/ha G. affinis plus Bti and 3.4 kg/ha G. affinis plus Bti. Gambusia affinis, at both release rates, significantly reduced the mosquito population at densities exceeding 100 fish/minnow trap. Treatments with Bti significantly reduced larval population; however, the populations in the fields without fish rebounded to pretreatment levels within two weeks. In fields stocked with G. affinis and treated with Bti, populations remained low after Bti treatment. Nontarget populations of arthropods were significantly lower in fields stocked with G. affinis than in fields without fish on one or more sampling dates.

An evaluation of the mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, and the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, as mosquito control agents in California wild rice fields.

The mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, and the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, were evaluated in experimental, one-tenth hectare wild rice plots in Lake County, California, for their impact on densities of Culex tarsalis, Anopheles freeborni and Anopheles franciscanus. Gambusia affinis were tested at 0.6 and 1.7 kg/ha and the silversides at ca. 0.9 kg/ha. The silversides did not survive well...

Effect of rice husbandry on mosquito breeding at Mwea Rice Irrigation Scheme with reference to biocontrol strategies.

A study was carried out at Mwea Rice Irrigation Scheme, Kenya, to assess the impact of rice husbandry on mosquito breeding and identify indigenous biocontrol agents with potential for controlling mosquito breeding in the scheme. The study established a close relationship between the schedule of the farming practices (particularly the flooding phase) and mosquito breeding. Two groups of agents, ...

Dynamics of the control of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti Linnaeus (Diptera, Culicidae) by Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis, related with temperature, density and concentration of insecticide1

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fevers are diseases which etiologic agents are transmitted by the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, 1762. This species is also capable of transmitting the yellow fever virus. The vector as well as the disease has become an economic and public health problem. Affected countries invest a significant part of the gross domestic product in the vector-disease contr...

Bacterial control of mosquito larvae: investigation of stability of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus standard powders.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus products were assayed against their respective reference powders IPS82 and SPH88. Since their production in 1982 and 1988, the potency and larvicidal activity of these standard powders have been regularly checked on their test insects Aedes aegypti (for IPS82) or Culex pipiens (for SPH88). Over the 16-year evaluation period of IPS8...

Relative potency of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus 2362 for Mansonia titillans and Mansonia dyari.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (B.t.i.), HD-968-S-1983, and a primary powder of Bacillus sphaericus 2362 were assayed against Mansonia titillans and Ma. dyari. The susceptibility of the 2 species to the individual bacterial toxins was similar. The B.t.i. LC50 values were 50.5 micrograms/liter for Ma. dyari and 54.7 micrograms/liter for Ma. titillans; the B. sphaericus LC50 values were ...
